Matt Hamilton

Assistant Professor | email | CV
I’m broadly interested in how groups of people work together to manage environmental risk in coupled human-natural systems. Much of my research focuses on the interplay among policy, social, and cognitive processes, and how interactions among people, organizations, ideas, and even units of land shape environmental management outcomes. Key themes include collaborative governance, multistakeholder decision-making processes, behavioral adaptation, boundary-spanning institutions, and social-ecological interdependence. The tools and perspectives of network science are important in this work, but I also use surveys, interviews, and participatory research methods. Most of the research projects I contribute to are collaborative and interdisciplinary; please visit research for details on specific projects.

Graduate Students

Kimberly Ordonez

PhD Student | email | CV
Kimberly is a PhD student in Environmental Social Science and holds an interest in co-productive science, multi-scale behavioral adaptations to environmental pressures, and environmental justice. Her current projects include Climate Change related adaptations by environmental stakeholders in Ohio including Nongovernmental Organizations, private businesses, nonprofits, and federal offices. Her research goals involve expanding her studies into environmental justice and localized community acceptance of climate change adaptations. Kimberly hopes to one day work in a position of translational science, engaging communities and scientists alike, to assist in fair and realistic behavioral changes for a positive socio-ecological outcome. In the meantime, she enjoys exploring the Columbus food scene and walking her two dogs.

Harrison Fried

PhD Student | email | CV
Harrison is a PhD student in Environmental Social Sciences. His research focuses on how people work together to solve complex environmental problems. Specifically, he adopts a social-ecological network approach to understand climate change adaptation governance, which is an issue that is complex both socially and ecologically. His existing research is informed by several theories of environmental governance, including institutional (or social-ecological) fitness and the Ecology of Games Theory. In his free time, Harrison enjoys to spend time with his friends and family, attend Ohio State football games, and explore Columbus.

Prabhjot Singh

PhD Student | email | CV
Prabhjot (Prabu) Singh is a PhD student in the Environmental Science Graduate Program at OSU. Prior to joining the SENS lab, Prabu completed her BA in Art and Biology at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2019. She then worked with the Sprunger Lab and completed her MS in Environmental Science at OSU in the Summer of 2021. Her research has explored both quantitative and qualitative data to understand the existing state of soil health on farms in the Midwest and how farmers may perceive or use biological soil health data to inform their management practices. As she continues with the SENS Lab for her PhD, Prabu is interested in using interdisciplinary methods to understand decision-making in agriculture, communicate scientific research with broader audiences, and further study soil health in the Midwest. In her free time, Prabu enjoys gardening, running, crocheting, painting, cooking, and spending time with friends and family!

Abigail André

PhD Student | email | CV
Abigail is a PhD student in Environmental Social Sciences and holds a JD from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Her research is inherently intersectional, and focuses on factors that influence relocation in response to climate-fueled and manmade disasters. Considering individual and community-driven factors, Abigail’s research explores why people choose to stay in communities subject to high environmental risks. From a legal perspective, she is focused on the effectiveness of government institutions and laws designed to respond to disasters. Abigail has a particular interest in the impacts of disasters on underserved communities, including people of color, low income, and rural populations. In her free time, Abigail enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, and visiting the Clintonville Farmer’s Market.

Jordan is a Master’s student. His academic interests are focused on network analysis, social-ecological systems, and the effects of climate change on local governance. He is a firm believer in the importance of grassroots organization. In the future, he hopes to help communities develop a deeper understanding of the complex systems they inhabit and the policy discourse that surrounds them. He also enjoys adventuring to new places with his wife, Maggie, to explore diverse communities and ecosystems.

Monika Moreu-Vicente

MSc Student | email | CV
Monika is a Master’s student working on the perceptions of wildfire risk in the heathland ecosystems of northern Europe, primarily the United Kingdom and Norway. Originally from Puerto Rico, she earned her B.Sc. in Geology at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez where she conducted multiple research projects in the Caribbean. She is interested in bridging the natural and social sciences to better understand how to make conservation/restoration-related judgments and decisions, protect Puerto Rico’s natural resources, and in strengthening stakeholder engagement and action. In her spare time, she enjoys cycling, having a good cup of coffee, watching documentaries, and cuddling with her cat Chiki.
